Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping launched the construction of the Karnaphuli Tunnel on October 14, 2017, and Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this tunnel on October 28, 2023. The tunnel connects Chittagong’s port city in the north with Anwara upazila in the south, running beneath the Karnaphuli River at depths ranging from 18 to 31 meters. The 3.32 km tunnel is the second “dream plan” in the road transport sector after the Padma Bridge in connecting the two regions of the country. The length of the entire route is 9.39 kilometers (5.83 mi), the tunnel is 3.32 kilometers (2.06 mi) long and has a diameter of 10.80 meters (35.4 ft).It features multiple lanes, making transportation more efficient. For instance, the journey from Dhaka to Chittagong and the tourist city of Cox’s Bazar will be shortened by 40 kilometers, saving an hour of travel time. The project was completed at a cost of Tk 10,374 crore, with almost half of the funding coming from China’s Exim Bank. The China Communication and Construction Company Limited (CCCC) conducted the tunnel’s construction. This tunnel not only improves economic activities but also has the potential to boost tourism in the region.
