The Bangabandhu Tunnel, spanning 3.32 km, is a significant infrastructure project in Bangladesh, connecting the port city of Chittagong on the north of the Karnaphuli River with the Anwara upazila in the south. The tunnel is an important link like the Padma Bridge, bringing two important regions of the country closer to each other. This tunnel has two four-lane tubes, each 2.45 kilometers long, and two connecting roads, 5.35 kilometers each, on its ends. There’s also a 727-meter-long flyover at the Anwara end. Cars can go through at up to 80 km/h, and it’s deep, 18 to 31 meters under the river.
Jointly funded by the governments of Bangladesh and China, with a total investment of Tk 10,689.71 crore, the construction of this tunnel was supervised by China Communication and Construction Company Limited (CCCC). The tunnel will help Bangladesh’s economy, possibly increasing the GDP by 0.166%.
